Robert Gough

WRITER and DIRECTOR

In 1986 Robert began working backstage for the Court Theatre in Christchurch, New Zealand, and crewing for the occasional documentary. Since that time he has worked intermittently in film and television as a producer, writer and director.

Since his teenage years Robert has been awestruck by the works of playwrights such as Sophocles, Shakespeare, Wilde, Shaw, Pinter, Stoppard, and Mamet to name a few. However, many of the influences and inspirations for An Elephant in the Room come from everyday experiences with ordinary and extraordinary people he’s met or just heard about.

The script for An Elephant in the Room was completed in 2009, and after extensive notes, comments and readings, Robert has decided the play is ready for the stage.  He describes the play as “containing just about everything good, bad, disastrous and wondrous that I’ve ever observed in human behaviour”.

Robert regards the medium of theatre as having its own peculiar charm, and he enjoys the people and collaborative nature of stage production.
